Wellness Program Step
4: Mind-Body-Health Your living is determined
not so much by what life brings you as by the attitude you bring to life; not
so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens. Hans
Selye M.D. is credited as the originator of the concept of stress and the recognition
of the vital role it plays in our health. It is important to recognize that there
are two forms of stress-short term (acute) and long term (chronic), which have
very different health consequences. Reactions to stress are governed largely by
the autonomic nervous system. It has 2 branches- the sympathetic nervous system
that causes the body to be aroused and prepared to "fight or flee" and
the parasympathetic nervous system- which has an opposite effect of calming and
relaxing the body. Your anti-aging program provides you with
one or more ways to induce a positive parasympathic state. Dr.
Herbert Benson named this state "the relaxation response" and spent
several years researching the key ingredients needed to induce this response in
humans. They include the following four simple elements: - 1)
A QUIET ENVIRONMENT 2) A MENTAL DEVICE 3) A PASSIVE ATTITUDE 4) A
COMFORTABLE POSITION The resultant hypo-metabolic
state caused by inducing the "relaxation response" is characterized
by: 1) Reduction in heart-rate 2) Reduction in respiratory
rate 3) Reduction in blood pressure 4) Reduction in oxygen consumption
5) Reduction in tissue sensitivity to stress hormones 6) Enhancement of immune
function 7) Redistribution of blood flow 8) Changes in the EEG recording As
mentioned, the amount of stress we feel is based far more on our perception of
a person, situation or event than on the event (stressor) itself. How
we come to order our thoughts (worldview) is thus critical to our perception and
psychological functioning. Our feelings and emotions are an indicator of the quality
and direction of this psychological functioning. As a medical
doctor I have come to recognize that this "ordering of consciousness"
or worldview is perhaps more important than all the wellness and lifestyle choices
you make. Remembering is central to this process and includes the integration
of our species and our own psycho-historical development. (ontogeny recapitulates
phylogeny). * Eternity Medicine is ultimately about this awareness
of the non-local nature of our mind (consciousness) that it is- infinite, indestructible
and immortal. Eternity Medicine because it recognizes the infinite nature
of consciousness regards immortality as a given. This is a monumental event in
the history of medicine. * For those clients interested
in a more detailed explanation of the evolution of consciousness, please see Appendix
B - Eternity Medicine (2003) in our book, Spa Medicine. See
