Deprenyl is also known as selegiline has shown the ability to dramatically
increase the life expectancy of animals after a series of famous experiments in
the 1960s by Professor Joseph Knoll. He proved that Deprenyl improves the availability
of dopamine, and slows its age-related decline by acting as a selective MAO-B
inhibitor and even more importantly, according to Professor Joseph Knoll at the
June 2000 Monte Carlo Anti-Aging Conference, it has an enhancer effect and helps
maintain healthy brain cells, (particularly in the dopamine producing neuron area
of the brain called the substantia nigra). Deprenyl enhances brain levels of both
dopamine and PEA. There is a 13% per decade decline in brain dopamine levels past
the age of 40 for normal healthy individuals (Dean, Fowkes & Morgenthaler).

When dopamine levels reach 30% of normal levels Parkinsons disease is diagnosed,
when dopamine levels reach 10% of normal levels death ensues. Therefore, human
longevity is in-part governed by the rate of dopamine decline and its support
and enhancement means not only longer life but lucid mental capabilities too.

Deprenyl is also noted to have anti-depression properties and aphrodisiac effects
(much more so for men) helping to improve sexual function and desire. Its official
approved use is to treat Parkinsons disease (because this is a disease that affects
the brain levels of dopamine), but it is also being used more and more in other
dementias and even cancers. Parkinson and Alzheimers disease patients are often
treated with very high doses of 20mg daily (often along with other drugs of course).
Anti-aging doses (dependant on age and condition) are more likely to be 2.5mg
to 5mg once, twice or three times a week, or better still 1-3mg per day. Deprenyl
tablets are selegiline hydrochloride, which is deprenyl bonded to an in-organic
molecule, however liquid deprenyl citrate (LDC) is selegiline bonded to an organic
molecule, one reason why the liquid deprenyl citrate is considered to be superior.
This form is generally recognised as the most pure and potent form of deprenyl
available. It also allows precise titration for anti-aging purposes, as each ml
drop in the bottle is equivalent to 1mg deprenyl citrate. The manufacturer recommends
1mg two times a week for 30 to 35 years olds up to 10mg daily for 80 year olds
plus (an age/ dosage list in English is enclosed with order). Ward Dean MD recommends
reducing deprenyl doses after several months too lower levels and taking occasional
sabbaticals. Caution: Deprenyl hydrochloride is a controlled substance in Japan;
this may be because a tiny amount of the product in tablet form is derived from
amphetamine. However it is estimated that a very high dose of deprenyl (20mg)
produces only 1/100th of the amount required for a positive-dope-test!
